Amy Stafford & Cindi Wynia / Arthurian Legends and Life in the Middle Ages
Dates/Times:
Each Saturday in June at 2:00pm.
1. Why are we asking students to engage in this learning experience? Goals/Standards
This series will expose children in Kindergarten to 2nd grade and their families to a legend found in traditional literature. We want families to be aware of the variety of subjects available at the library and open doors to worlds they have not visited before through literature, specifically in this case, the 398.2 section of the library.
2. What do we want the students to learn? Performance Indicators/Learning Objectives
We want the children to learn not only about the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable, but about life during the Middle Ages. After this program series, children should be able to identify some differences between modern living and life in the Middle Ages, such as having a King vs. having a President, nobleman and peasants compared to modern day rich and poor, and from a storytelling and literature standpoint, the difference between fiction and non-fiction.
3. In what specific learning experiences do we want them to engage? Who will be responsible for each? Learning Tasks/Responsible Educator
We want the children to become engaged with Camelot through storytelling by a shared presentation of stories. Amy will tell the stories of Young Arthur and Young Merlin. Cindi will tell the stories of Young Guinevere and Young Lancelot. We will perform the puppet show together. We will discuss the culture of the period together as we show excerpts from the dvd selections. Amy will focus on the foods, clothing, and customs of the classes. Cindi will explain the jobs, artisans, and living conditions of the time. We will compare and contrast lifestyles then and now throughout our presentations. We will work together to assist children in designing their shields. Amy will contact the artisans while Cindi contacts the theater group. Cindi will acquire the temporary food handlers permit and Amy will purchase food.
4. How will they communicate what they learned? Learning Process/Products
Children will discuss what they found most interesting at each session, ask questions throughout, and participate in the activities. Time will be allowed after each session for continued conversation, play, and interaction with each other and the librarians.
5. How will they/we assess their learning? Assessment Criteria/Tool(s)
We will assess learning and program success in multiple ways. First, we will record attendance numbers for each program. Second, we will provide parents with a survey after each program. Third, we will monitor Facebook and Twitter to determine if families are commenting on and sharing their experience during and after each session. Fourth, we will monitor circulation statistics for the 398.2 and 940.1 sections for 6 weeks post sessions.
6. What resources will the students/we need?
